eHarmony to go back to selling books, hopes it will do better “the second time around”

In 2003-2005, when you bought a one-year subscription to eHarmony, you received a free “Relationship Starter Package” (FAQ #73), which consists of two books by eHarmony founder Dr. Neil Clark Warren entitled, “Finding the Love of Your Life” and “Date…Or Soul Mate?: How To Know If Someone Is Worth Pursuing In Two Dates Or Less”.

These two books, a third and a set of instructional audio CDs were available at the “eHarmony Bookstore” section of the site. Warren and then-CEO Greg Forgatch were quoted to believe in using books, audiobooks and nationwide speaking engagements to educate people about elements of successful relationships and picking the right partner.

Warren and Forgatch retired from the company (which since was sold off to venture capitalists) in 2006, and the company quietly shut down the bookstore late 2007.

Without telling you… eHarmony changes its Terms and Conditions (22 November 2010)

(For everyone’s information, eHarmony changes its terms and conditions of service from time to time, without telling its members and customers beforehand. Also, eHarmony never tells anyone what the changes were. In October 2008, I got sick and tired of this and decided to use a “web page monitoring service” to watch for changes to their TOS page (plus a few others), and then of course report them here. This will be a regular column under this blog’s “Site changes” category. I hope you find it useful.)

Summary of changes

  • Lady drinks?: Selection of Profiles. From time to time, your profile may be selected to introduce you to specific compatible matches, in which case we may offer you a limited complimentary subscription (if you are not already a subscriber) in order to enable you to meet such specific match. You will be under no obligation to accept such complimentary subscription or to meet with or communicate with the match(es) we may introduce to you.
  • The section regarding renewals is now in red lettering.
  • You must meet certain “Matching System Criteria” to receive service.
  • eHarmony makes no guarantees to one’s matches’ ability, desire or criteria to communicate with any user.
  • Using the Law Enforcement and DMCA Contact fax numbers or email addresses to contact eHarmony for other matters will be ignored. [No, the bums are too lazy to route your fax or forward your email. It's too much.]
  • eHarmony Marriage is gone.

eHarmony to launch eHarmony Japan

Last June 16, we predicted this will happen. You hear it here first in eHarmony Blog.

eHarmony Japan

http://www.eharmony.jp/

Kaori KitagawaIts server shows that the site was put up on September 28, 2010, which is a month and a half after Brazil officially launched. According to the domain’s Whois data, the company bought the .jp domain in January 20, 2009.

Kaori Kitagawa is eHarmony Japan’s Product Manager. She probably wrote the copy on the .jp homepage.

The most credible explanation I heard about this delay: The new eHarmony's CEO had ordered eHarmony's Team to develop a new high precision compatibility matching algorithm by strict personality similarity using the NORMATIVE 16PF5 or similar test and launch it in a new site before February 2012. Nov 1-Nov 30: eHarmony Canada’s Twenty-Ninth Free Communication Event

Flag of CanadaReady for pain, Canada?

For the entire month of November, non-subscribers (they cannot see how you look like) will be able to initiate and respond to communication with you and trade one or two bits of information — EXCEPT THEIR CONTACT INFO. They have to pay the subscription to do that, so make sure you capture their interest. Note that AFTER THEY PAY they will be in the boat as you are, working to convince non-subscribers to pay up.

It’s like a ponzi scheme.

Bring out the bubbly, it’s a month long Free Guided Communication Event for Canada. To save 50%-70% on your subscription, use these promo codes. Sorry, Americans, wait for your turn. You’ll get your chance later.

For tips and tricks to make the most out of this torment, er, I mean, event, read our TaTftFGCE.

Official eHarmony Blogs pronounced dead

The last post on the official eHarmony corporate blog was June 28, four months ago. Meanwhile, the last post on the smoke-and-mirrors eHarmony Labs blog was September 14, 6 weeks ago. Their Tin anniversary came and went and no one updated these blogs about it.

Fortunately, their eHarmony Advice site and their Facebook page have gathered a few site regulars. Kudos to Kate, Renee, Lori and their Social Media team.

eHarmony’s corporate blog didn’t even last one year. Sigh.

Q&A: What’s the lowest price should I expect to pay for eHarmony? (October 2010)

eHarmony started pricing very aggressively last August when it started accepting $5 promo codes. Last week Lauren said, “I know better now than to pay $5/month for renewals.” When your customers get used to paying $5, it’s impossible to charge them $20 in the future, unless your offer something tangibly 4× better.

So how far low has the prices gone? As low as $3.71 a month including Total Connect last September.

$14.95 for 4 months of Total Connect

This is $14.85 for a plan that they normally sell for $167.17 (i.e., $134.85 + $32.32). It’s a savings of $152.32, or 91.12% off. If you applied the code 3 times, you only paid $44.55 for a year of eHarmony Grande.

When calling eHarmony as a trick to get a few months free, use this price as leverage.

P.S. Yay, we’ll hit the $2.2 million dollar mark of savings early this week. Guys, keep voting!

After not finding a working code for returning members, I subscribed yesterday for one month for $59.95. Per your suggestion, I called Customer Service today and told them I saw "buy one month, get two months free online". The Customer Service person didn't even give me an argument. She just aske …
