A single male in North Carolina who has a pretty good idea of what he wants in a relationship partner but can’t seem to find it on eHarmony or just about anywhere else he looks…

Match.com buys another competitor…

According to the linked Forbes blog, IAC Interactive, the parent company of Match.com, Chemistry.com Singlesnet and OkCupid!, has put in a bid to acquire meetic.

Some history:

  • Match.com agreed to hand over the European operations to meetic for a 27% share in meetic
  • They sign over their market/leads to them to become the market leader in Europe (apparently, Match.com didn’t do well in Europe, reference all the research from Fernando Ardenghi on culture differences, etc.)
  • meetic sells out to Match.com (this piece of news)
  • …of course, this means that meetic users are going to be moved over to Match.com in the near term, just like they were when Match.com absorbed Yahoo! Personals.

I strongly agree that a carnivore dinosaur (Match) is going to eat a vegetarian dinosaur (Meetic). C-Level executives are more worried about their golf scores than their company's long term strategy and innovations. The Online Dating Industry needs to kill the Matchmaking Industry, like compute …

    Brainstorming alternatives to online dating

An open forum (via the comments) to collect ideas of alternative methods of meeting new people (for those who need a break from online dating or believe that online dating is ineffective or just as effective as the random events of life).

Here are some to start the list:

Everyone can help promote honesty on dating sites by…

[Making a formal post to hopefully start a positive movement from what was mentioned in a comment on here]

If a dating site isn’t working for you and you aren’t an active member:

    • Set your profile not to be searchable
    • Delete your profile if you looked “at the pond” and found it to be “empty” and don’t anticipate using it again/signed up on a trial basis
    • When they ask you for feedback as to why you are closing your account, tell them their service doesn’t work and you aren’t going to stick around to fluff up their membership numbers
    • Post these suggestions elsewhere so others will follow suit

My suggestions: Read profiles before sending off that message. Only message someone if you meet what they state they are looking for. It's extremely frustrating to get 20 emails per day to surf through, only to discover they are all a complete waste of time because they ignored my "looking fors". …

Match.com, desperate to fluff up membership numbers, resorts to bribery…

Gift cards? Really? An interesting marketing idea…

So, a new member (and their credit card number and agreement to pay after the free three-day trial which they have to cancel within 72 business hours of beginning it, if their agreement is still the same) is worth $25 to them (or some portion thereof, as they probably are getting those gift cards in bulk and probably some sort of delayed payment scheme).

Online dating safety makes the news again

Seen on several news sites that have picked up this AP News feed.

What is interesting is this snippet:
“The Texas legislation requires online dating services to clearly disclose to customers whether they conduct criminal background checks on each member before allowing them to contact other members on the site. The same bill requires the sites to remind customers that background checks are not a perfect safety solution and they can be circumvented by criminals.”

Remember folks, Match.com is located in Texas…

"how do you know that they do not have nefarious intentions when dating/meeting new people the old-fashioned way?" If the dating site offers compatibility as strict personality similarity, it will be delivering candidates with nearly the same personality as you. And if it has a high precision co …

    Match.com sued: lawsuit sign-up form

If you have been a member on Match.com, I think everyone who has ever used online dating would urge that you to sign up so this case can set a precedent against the “false advertising” and force all dating sites to indicate “activity” or “subscriber status”.
