Kim “canceled in August of 2005″ yet eHarmony took $1,278 from her bank account

One of our readers, Kim, left us this note:

Here is what E-Harmony did to me. This is a one of the letters I wrote to them. and how they responded to it. I would like to know if anyone has had a similar situation with them:

When I started using your services in March 2005, I was told by a E- Harmony represenitive I would have to cancel by phone, which I did in August 2005. When I kept receiving e-mails from E- Harmony saying someone requests communication I logged on in March of 2006 to see why I was still receiving e-mail from you. It showed I was canceled.
As far as my bank statements, my accountant did not bring these charges to my attention. It wasn’t until my bank recently notified me that I was at possible risk of Debit card fraud, that I became aware that E-Harmony has been taking money out of my account, which was not authorized.

You state that my satisfaction is important to you, although I am not satisfied. You have taken advantage of me as a consumer. You have seen that there has been no activity on my account but you were still taking money for services NOT rendered. That is outrageous.

I find it obvious that your willingness to refund me $79.90 based on my account activity an admission of guilt on your part. I don’t look at it as a courtesy, it is your obligation.`I have talked with my bank and told them I was trying to resolve this issue. They told me if It wasn’t resolved to call them back and file A claim. If they can be of no assistance,I will take further legal action. I canceled in August of 2005.

My account was inactive foe 30 months. (2 YEARS AND 6 MONTHS) that I was being charged for, and the total money you have taken out of my account is $1198.50. I already deducted the 2 months you refunded and 1 month in March of 2006 that I logged on to take care of this issue. The unauthorized charges to my canceled account is unacceptable and needs to be refunded immediately.

File a claim, Kim, or take this matter to your local police or local TV station. The tone of their email tells me that for them the matter is closed.

The “Incident Number” on the email says you wrote them on 26 May 2008. Is the date on the eHCS email correct?

Guys, this is why it is very important to remove your credit card information from companies and websites when you cancel their services.

“This is why we suggest in the beginning of your subscription that if you do not want this to occur that you simply turn it off before you forget about doing so.”

I reviewed past emails and this ‘suggestion’ is nowhere in sight. You ought to challenge them on this. It’s a lie.

      Kim, please keep up posted.

I’m having a similar problem. After filling out the questionnaire I was told I could not be matched and they could not provide service to me. That was several months ago. I just noticed on my checking account statement that they are still charging me! I can’t even click on an account page to close my inactive account because as soon as I log in it takes me to the “cannot provide service” page. Clicking on any link from there logs me out. I emailed them a week ago demanding a refund and to close my account. So far I’ve heard nothing.

Is that right, James? The questionnaire failed you the second time you took it, and then the autorenewal still fired on the renewal date?

How much money did eHarmony wrongfully take from you?

I don’t remember, but what would be the point in taking the questionnaire twice… lying about who you are the second time to get more matches?! They only took about $50 ($17 X 3 months) I think, so I’m not in the hole quite as deep as many of the other people. I tried the 800 number other people listed and it wouldn’t connect. Luckily their number showed up on my checking account statement as 800-951-2023. I called and spoke to a couple different people. Supposedly my account is now closed, but when I asked for a confirmation number they didn’t have one. All she could offer was that her name was Michelle.

Please try to remember and be sure of your facts. If the questionnaire turned you down then it is impossible that you were able to enter your financial information on the site.

Because you said “still charging me” I understand this to mean that you did in the past pay for a subscription. This is impossible when the questionnaire turned you down…. unless you took the questionnaire again, like I said.

Please try to remember and be sure of your facts.
