One of our readers, Kim, left us this note:
Here is what E-Harmony did to me. This is a one of the letters I wrote to them. and how they responded to it. I would like to know if anyone has had a similar situation with them:
When I started using your services in March 2005, I was told by a E- Harmony represenitive I would have to cancel by phone, which I did in August 2005. When I kept receiving e-mails from E- Harmony saying someone requests communication I logged on in March of 2006 to see why I was still receiving e-mail from you. It showed I was canceled.
As far as my bank statements, my accountant did not bring these charges to my attention. It wasn’t until my bank recently notified me that I was at possible risk of Debit card fraud, that I became aware that E-Harmony has been taking money out of my account, which was not authorized.
You state that my satisfaction is important to you, although I am not satisfied. You have taken advantage of me as a consumer. You have seen that there has been no activity on my account but you were still taking money for services NOT rendered. That is outrageous.
I find it obvious that your willingness to refund me $79.90 based on my account activity an admission of guilt on your part. I don’t look at it as a courtesy, it is your obligation.`I have talked with my bank and told them I was trying to resolve this issue. They told me if It wasn’t resolved to call them back and file A claim. If they can be of no assistance,I will take further legal action. I canceled in August of 2005.
My account was inactive foe 30 months. (2 YEARS AND 6 MONTHS) that I was being charged for, and the total money you have taken out of my account is $1198.50. I already deducted the 2 months you refunded and 1 month in March of 2006 that I logged on to take care of this issue. The unauthorized charges to my canceled account is unacceptable and needs to be refunded immediately.

Dear Kim,
Thank you for contacting eHarmony.
We have read your e-mail and reviewed your account. We do understand that
ending up with multiple charges to your account unexpectedly can be frustrating.
That being said, we do need to remind you that each time you purchase a
subscription included in the page with the confirmation notice is the following
announcement:
Please Note in order to ensure uninterrupted service, all eHarmony subscriptions
will be automatically renewed 24 hours before they expire. To turn off the
auto-renew feature, please go to the Account Settings section under the My
Settings tab and choose close account after completing your purchase.
We also realize that with all the events in one’s life it is easy to forget
about this warning. This is why we suggest in the beginning of your
subscription that if you do not want this to occur that you simply turn it off
before you forget about doing so.
During the period of time that your account has been auto renewing, you have
been receiving statements from your bank/credit card company showing and
identifying every charge that came from eHarmony.com.
Your satisfaction is important to us. We have reviewed your account activity,
