Tips and tricks: Are Must Have/Can’t Stand lists used in matching?

Question:

Does eHarmony consider the members’ Must Have/Can’t Stands list when matching members?

Answer:

No. Here are the two evidence:

1. Members receive matches immediately after they pass the questionnaire. This is before members have a chance to create their MH/CS lists.

2. Most MH/CS choices cannot be used in pairs.

In short, it’s up to members to review their matches’ Must Have/Can’t Stand lists for incompatibilities.

However, what you imply is an awesome system improvement. Some MH/CS choices are indeed in pairs and some do lift off the personality profile. I’m sending this to the eHarmony scientists and engineers for consideration for their next version of the questionnaire.

If the questionnaire was better, then Must Haves and Can’t Stands would be redundant.
There’s no need to have them. At best, they are only tapping the same domains as good questions should, in a superior questionnaire. Asking direct questions and expecting accurate data is called “naive psychology” and this is the most likely result of the eharmony questionnaire, which is much too direct to produce valid results. A scientifically viable set of questions can’t rely on ‘honesty’ because people always put their best foot forward. A better questionnaire is needed, which includes subtle questioning which minimized the likelihood of socially desirable responses.
