Commotion at eHarmony Advice …

When topics containing thoughtful contributions of several members suddenly get taken off the air …

When two posts that are the same word-for-word are moderated and rejected at certain times of the day but are published right away at other times …

When topics that are legitimate and sincere requests for advice disappear all of a sudden …

When site moderators sit behind closed curtains, never disclose their identities and never post any explanation for why topics and posts vanish or are moderated …

… you find a community that is confused, held back and unsatisfied.

(Blaming lost posts and lost topics to broken database connections only works once or twice. It won’t work the third time.)

Don’t know what I’m talking about? See http://advice.eharmony.com/?page=view_thread&TID=14082 (while it’s still there).

  1. Yes!!!! That’s my thread! Yes, I’m IrishBrian. I posted that thread because I intentionally wanted to taunt the moderators. I’m suprised they kept the thread up. However, many of my other posts have been moderated. Go figure!

  3. I agree in that when you’re part of a community and are severely censored (whether it be automated or individual), it smarts.

I understand moderating (to make sure the TOS are adhered to). What I don’t understand (or approve of) is removing the sense that your thread or blog or article…is yours. When they (the powers that be) remove something written in earnest (and not something hateful, inflammatory or angry/abusive/attacking someone else in the community)…it’s unprofessional.

Thank you for the link here….. :)

  4. I personally cannot stomach the eharmony advice boards.

The majority of posters there come across as unrealistic Pollyanna’s jacked on sunshine, unicorns, rainbows and kittys .

  5. Wow, you mean the gals? cause the guys there have very much NOT been Pollyanna-esque…..

  6. I think the majority of posts are full of platitudes and “you go girl!” types of responses.

  7. RE: #4, Shar,

    1. Thank you, I think…

    2. Post approval and moderation is skewed towards Polyannas, that’s why.

    3. There, appeasing advertisers and sponsors is most important.

    4. The questionnaire, and thus the whole site, is skewed towards Polyannas, anyhow.
