So you wanna be in an eHarmony commercial?

[This post has won the "Getting an Official eHarmony Staff to Comment" award.]

There are two ways to make your dream come true.

1. Audition

Some past eHarmony commercials showed actors, not real-life couples:

In September 2006, eHarmony ran several auditions in Los Angeles for actors for these TV ads. This article describes these auditions, so you may try your luck with those. I don’t know though if eHarmony will decide to run these type of ads again.

Annie, Becky and Briana — well I have been on a manhunt for these women to ask them, “You’ve been eHarmony members for three doggone years, have you even gone on a date with anyone?” — I don’t know whether they auditioned or whether they got a special email from eHarmony marketing. I would think they auditioned.

Note to male readers: Female members see Annie, Becky and Briana, too. This is a dead giveaway that they are really marketing to men.

2. Submit your story

The other way is to submit a fantastic love story to eHarmony.

Fun Facts: The stars are actual couplesTypical eHarmony TV and radio commercials are starred by real life couples, not actors. eHarmony CEO Greg Waldorf, in a recent webcast interview, said that commercials with real-life couples have been very successful for the company. We can therefore expect eHarmony to “hire” more couples in the future.

According to eHarmony, the TV couples were not compensated for their testimonials. Trips and corporate giveaways like plaques and baseball shirts, perhaps, but not cash.

eHarmony is on a constant search for successful eHarmony couples. They have staff working full-time searching for success stories and testimonials. They don’t to go out on the streets, or send “were you successful?” surveys, though. Instead, the company set up stories@eharmony.com and a “Tell Us” page to receive submissions.

To encourage submissions, eHarmony has been running an annual Couple of the Year Contest in the past four years. The prize is usually a honeymoon travel package for two. Winning the contest doesn’t guarantee a TV spot, but the screening process involves the same staff in eHarmony.

  • In 2007, more than 25,000 eHarmony couples submitted their story in hopes of being named the winner.
  • Each year eHarmony selects 50 couples, representing all 50 states in the United States based on their eHarmony story, and also selects a grand prize winner.
  • At the time of this writing, eHarmony has no success story from Canada yet. eHarmony Australia and eHarmony United Kingdom are likewise ripe for endorsers.
  • eHarmony told each winner that the press may contact them. That’s exactly what happened to TV couple Travis and Farren Wilkenson, 2007 Idaho Couple of the Year: The Idaho Statesman published their story last February.

So you wanna be in an eHarmony commercial? Submit a fabulous love story to eHarmony. Here are a few ideas and tricks to get you started:

  • “The more romantic the story, the better your chances of being selected.” That’s the only criterion for judging.
  • Hire a romance novelist as a ghost writer.
  • Read the 2007 Grand Prize winning entry.
  • There is no word limit. Multiple submissions are accepted.
  • Make sure it has mass appeal.
  • Engagement or marriage isn’t a requirement.
  • Support your story with photos or videos. The more syrupy the better.
  • You must be 20 or older.
  • This is only for male-female couples. (It had to be said.)
  • Ensure that you were matched via eHarmony. (This is easily orchestrated.)
  • Protect your copyright. Make sure you state “All rights reserved.” With these three simple words, you give eHarmony no permission to publish your submission.

Good luck!

Thanks for you interest in eHarmony and the opportunity to participate in your blog. I’d like to comment on the posting earlier this week regarding auditions for eHarmony ads. In our TV advertising campaign, we have always used real couples who met on eHarmony. Our real-life couples are the most effective communicators for eHarmony and we are proud to showcase them.

In response to your blog posting, we’d like to clarify any inference that couples used in our ads are paid actors.

It is true that back in 2006 we did conduct auditions but it is important to note that these auditions were not to find actors who would depict eHarmony couples. These auditions were to find actors who could portray single people in an alternate tv campaign that humorously depicted bad first dates and advocated eHarmony as a way to improve your chances of meeting a compatible person. This campaign was tested in the U.S. for only a few months and ended in early 2007. Here’s an example of that alternative campaign (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8dSCzWlcN0).

For examples of our latest tv ads with our real couples, please take a look at http://www.youtube.com/eharmony

If any couples are interested in being considered for eHarmony TV ads, they should submit their story to us (just click on the “Success Stories” link at the bottom of our homepage). We find our TV couples by reviewing all the stories that are submitted.

    Sincerely,

    Hi Suzanne,

Oh we enjoy blogging about eHarmony; thanks for the information. I found those ads odd, personally, and I wasn’t surprised eHarmony stopped showing them.

The present campaign though got this comment “It seems eHarmony only has one success story lately..”, because at least 6 ads had Ann Marie and Lee. Too much of a good thing, I see.

I have a question, Suzanne, and I hope you answer it. On June 2005, you told OMMA (The Magazine for Online Media, Marketing and Advertising) that, “24 percent of total visitors in 2004 became paid subscribers.” That was impressive! Can you share with us the figure for 2007?

    Sincerely,
    eHB

I tried eHarmony. One thing they don’t tell people is: Modeling agencies(where I was signed up for free) and acting stables esp. for females are all given free contracts to eHarmony. There also given “Coaches” who encourage them to go on dates with eHarmony prospects (Mostly male). Incentives are given to attractive women who follow through.. It’s a scam.. You’ll have Far better luck just going out (not to mention more money in your pocket then paying eHarmony for a match that you could do at any store, mall, restaurant, bar or club for Free)

By the way im getting a Divorce from my eHarmony match, She turned out to be crazy and Criminally in Debt.. So much for their “Match Making”.

Joshua sorry to hear about your divorce. Farren and I agree with Tanyalee. We are happy to share our story with others. Yes in life, some stories don’t turn out as great as others so we count our blessings each day.

Joshua I hope you stay positve throughout the ordeal and manage to find someone even better. Good Luck!
