Poll 22 (Jul 08): Do you want matching by body type?

To the question “Why is body type not included in my match’s profile?”, eHarmony claims that displaying a match’s weight leads to inaccurate assumptions about a person’s bone structure, metabolisms and so forth.

This explanation is non-sequitur and broken, because body type and weight are two different things.

And is this what members want? This month, let’s find out with a poll.

Should eHarmony match on body type preference? (No, not weight!)

Trivia: Did you know that, in eHarmony’s initial design and its first 20 months of existence, photos were only available when matches reach the Open Communication stage? The photo sharing settings were introduced in their June 2002 newsletter, per popular request.

I think it would be a disservice to allow matching by body type because many people already limit themselves way too much when it comes to finding a mate.

Everyone already has a “type” that they prefer … and not looking outside of their self-imposed limits is the main reason why a lot of people don’t have a partner.

People are allowed to have preferences, but I think not allowing matching by body type allows us to stretch these preferences comfortably through photos and getting to know the other person.

I can’t begin to tell you the number of times I have met someone whose significant other wasn’t their ideal “type”, but they ended up falling in love anyway.

I simply am not going to date someone who is significantly overweight. Sorry. We can screen by race, religion, smoking and other parameters. This is an obvious one and should be included, at least for certain levels that a person exceeds the normal weight tables for healthy living.

I agree, I am a well built man that has muscle mass, that equates to fat women as far as eharmony is concerned, and that is what I got, they judge weight behind the scenes. They also don’t know anything about the states and seem to think its a little island. They don’t listen when you tell them that they are sending you matches that are 1000+ miles away or across borders. You can take my membership to the toilet and flush it.

Shar, sorry, but I can use your argument for drinking habits, for ethnicity and for denomination. In this age what have these three traits got to do with finding a long-term partner? Yet there, caucasians can refuse being matched with blacks.

    TWTMC,
I am trying to cancel my subscription. I have tried everything suggested with no results. I don’t want to renew my subscription. This is very frustrating. Can somebody give me advise that will work. All other attempted/suggested advise has failed. What’s the deal. I am very disappointed with e-Harmony.

    Pyke,

My post was about comfortably stretching a preference that can be visably assessesd through looking at photos rather than by checking a box.

To my knowledge, drinking habits, ethnicity and denomination cannot be accurately assessed by looking at a photograph. Weight distribution, or lack thereof, can.

You are free to limit yourself as much as you want, on whatever quality or trait you so choose. Personally … I like to look at a photo to see if I find someone attractive rather than letting a computer do it for me.

    Dave,

You may be getting far away matches because you have the I’m willing to be matched with people who are willing to relocate box checked.

I was mystified as to how several Floridians ended up as my matches (I’m in the NYC area), and that turned out to be the reason why.

They do have the fitness scale at the beginning. So, I’m not entirely sure how usefully a body type scale would be.
