“I accidentally closed a match, can I re-open it?”

A few days ago, SingleGuyInNC wrote about how he requested eHarmony Customer Service to reopen a match he closed many moons ago. The topic was “I accidentally closed a match, can I re-open it?” CS supposedly sent the match a message, but, according to SingleGuyInNC, the plan didn’t work.

In case you are wondering what is the wording of such a message from eHarmony Customer Care, in order to decide whether it is too pushy, pleading or pathetic, here it is:

Subject: eHarmony Communication Request [Incident: XXXXXX-XXXXXX]

Dear eHarmony Blog,

Greetings from eHarmony Customer Care.

Your match Jan from Anytown, USA recently contacted us and expressed interest in re-opening communication with you. Please reply if you are agreeable and I will re-open this match.

«Some tip for using eHarmony goes here.»

We look forward to helping you find the love of your life.

Sincerely,

John D.

We have recently introduced a new service called Refer a Friend. If you would like to share the joy of helping your friend find the love of their life, please select the following link: http://www.eharmony.com/refer/. We can send your friend a message so they can experience all eHarmony has to offer.

(The message is in plain text, like the usual communication from Customer Service.)

The recipient can, alternatively, send a Final Message.

What do you think of the message wording? Is it pathetic? If the recipient is a bit unsure, do you think he or she will reopen the match?

Meanwhile, we have a past post that shows the full text of a Final Message. Do you think a match will reopen the match with that?

Thanks for sharing that, eHarmony Blog.

Given eH encourages folks to widen their search area, I have to wonder why they haven’t automated the match re-opening process so that you could attempt to re-open matches from a geographic area that closed you because of your previous location if you moved closer to them. Why not put a link in the e-mail for the recipient to click on which does whatever needs to be done in “computer land” instead of having to e-mail a CS rep and then they have to tweak things manually. It would sure save on some human labor.

If the reopening closed matches is easy then the term “permanently close communication” would lose value.

I think “permanent” is why this CS email is likely futile. Joe already told Jane he is permanently closing the match. CS writing Jane saying, “Joe has expressed interest in re-opening” is quite unattractive.
