Tips & tricks: How many eHarmony members are in my city?

The population of eHarmony users is distributed in a manner similar to the population of the United States. Thus, if you live in a large urban area the likelihood that you will have a large number of matches is much greater than if you live in rural area. But we do have representation from all regions of the United States. It’s just that there may be fewer matches available in areas where the population is less dense.

How many members are in my city?

Because of what Buckwalter said, this is easy to estimate, and you don’t even need a map!

  1. Find your city, town, county, or zip’s population in the US Census Bureau Population Finder or in Wikipedia.
  2. Multiply that by eHarmony’s membership size = 17 million, as of August 2007. (Yeah, I know, ignore the rest of the world.)
  3. Divide the result by the current US population.

How many new members register in a day in my city?

  1. Find your city, town, county, or zip’s population in the US Census Bureau Population Finder or in Wikipedia.
  2. Multiply that by eHarmony’s daily registration = 16,000 per day. (Yeah, I know, ignore the rest of the world.)
  3. Divide the result by the current US population.

For example, today there are around 51,000 members and around 48 daily registrants in Honolulu County, Hawaii.

Wow. Good idea. It hit me like a ton of bricks. I wish I did this analysis before starting on eHarmony…. I could have saved a few months.

I think I can refine this a bit though… More on my blog when I return from vacation.

I’ve modified your model a bit – it’s now a full-fledged (and fully inaccurate) date predictor.

But it will help guide people’s thought processes about whether to join eHarmony or not. It can be downloaded from http://files.filefront.com/Date+predictordoc/;9322716;/fileinfo.html
