The Long Promised eHarmony “Dead Profile” Management Tip

A while back I wrote that if there was enough interest, I would blog about how I cull out the high number of “dead profiles” on eH….

It’s quite simple, really. So without further ado, here it is:

1. Set your eH sort order to “Recent Activity.”
2. When you receive a new match, DO NOT immediately click on the profile. I know you are curious, but show some restraint. This is the crux of the technique. You will thank me later.
3. When you receive a new match in your queue, the “Communication Stage” column is labeled as “Introduction.”
4. eH defines “activity’ in various ways, but in the context of this tip, the first “communication” occurs when one of the two match parties clicks on his/her opposite profile. If your match clicks on your profile before you click on his/hers, he/she jumps to the top of your queue (if sorted as indicated above!) and his/her Communication Stage changes to “Phase 1.”
5. Congratulations this match is not “dead. ” There is a live person on the other end. You still don’t know if they are a paid subscriber, but at least you know there is a chance that he/she will respond to an initial communication from you.
6. If he/she does not move to the top of your queue within 48 hours, close ‘em. They are dead.

Now some of you are probably thinking, “But what if both parties know this tip?” Good question. You’re right, a staring contest can result in this case. That’s why I impose the 48 hour rule. If the match does not “jump” within 48 hours, I read the profile anyway. About 90% of the time, the match’s profile is sparsely filled-out, in which case I close them immediately. She’s not serious about the process, so she’s outta here. About 2% of the time the profile is intriguing enough that I give her the benefit of the doubt and initiate communications. The probability of being “alive” at this point is low, but it’s a worth a small calculated risk. If I don’t hear back within 48 hours, I close her too. And you guessed it, the other 8% I close anyway. I’m not interested under any scenario.
