KNOXVILLE (WATE) — eHarmony claims it’s America’s #1 most trusted relationship service. But a Knoxville woman claims sex offenders are using the site to find their victims.

Dustin Martin Trickett of Maggie Valley, North Carolina is facing sexual assault charges. He met life-long Knoxville resident Rebecca Nieto on eHarmony in 2006. Read rest of news story or watch the video.

I am a paralegal in a state which has a searchable court database. When I ran a name search on one of my matches, I discovered he had a domestic violence conviction. I transmitted the info to eHarmony; subsequently, he was removed from the site. Two other of my matches were removed from the site for “violation of the terms of agreement.” I had received notification messages about those removals from eHarmony earlier. It seems to me this is relatively high proportion of matches with problems, especially considering I’ve only been a member for a couple of months. My match that was convicted of DV had obvious anger issues. I guess I’m wondering who exactly eHarmony is rejecting, if this type of individual is approved.

I love your site and read your blog often! Thanks!

Hi, I’m the person who was assaulted. I can’t believe how they just let EVERYONE on their website! This must be a gigantic issue! How can they say they’re going to do the matching for us and then match us up with people like this??? Thanks for your post!

Wow, this is actually pretty scary. I really think more people should know about this. You have to be one crazy sick individual to sign up to a dating or matchmaking service, post a full profile of your misguided self and prowl on the women you meat. I’m feel sorry for anyone who is put into such a terrible situation.

I realize this thread is very VERY old, and Thomas brought it back to the front…

But I also applaud Rebecca coming here and telling us about it.

That being said, I am not sure what people expect from eHarmony in this regard…

They do NOT run background checks on their members, and this is made VERY clear during the initial sign up time, as well as when you first start communication with any Match.

You could argue that they SHOULD do background checks, and perhaps they should…

However, would people be willing to pay $100+ a month subscription fees, instead of less than $20 a month?

Considering how many people think that even $20 is too much, I am guessing $100+ isn’t going to fly.

eHarmony does a VERY good job in kicking people off, when they made aware of someone who violates the TOS, which is really all we can expect from them.

Fact is, your neighbor could be a criminal, or your boss, or that guy/gal you met at a bar or church.
    You just never know…
