      Amazing news, eHB.

      …cracks knuckles…

$503 in membership fees to get another year, so $251.50 a year = $20.96/month for two years, which 90+% of subscribers will want to use because you probably won’t find someone in one year or even two. They are copying Match.com’s guarantee which is just as worthless but at least they don’t seem to require you to actually message a certain number of members in a timeframe since there is the whole guided communication aspect.

Pause: No details. Sounds like you can take three months off to pursue someone in “detail” and not have it count against your 12 months since you are buying a block of 12? This is going on the idea that failure is the norm with their service and that you will probably be back after your pause.

Three free months: We are tanking. We are desperate. Bring us your friends because you certainly can’t use those on matches you are interested in that aren’t subscribers. That may be the only thing to get the service to work. Weekly vouchers to upgrade members you are interested in.

Side conversation – I have not seen any FCW notices posted here in a while (and have turned off all emails from them). Did they abandon them entirely?

Starter package: You get a bunch of articles we have written in the past years, many of which on trivial nonsense that won’t help you any in finding a serious relationship.

Hand selected matches: This is VERY interesting. So, what you are saying, eHarmony, is that your fancy scientific algorithm doesn’t actually work and you need a human to ferret out some decent matches? :)

…or are they just going to withhold a few matches out of your pool and send them under a different “cover letter” so you think you are getting premium service?

Another question is if they are going to send you “live” members that are subscribers to make sure that you have someone to talk to? Interesting notion but I would bet that most will get closed out by those paying members quickly. Perhaps they could send you to some “robot” matches that will communicate, string you along for a few days and then close you, a la the Match.com fake profiles? Another possibility is they are compensated matches/employees posing who will communicate with you just to make you feel like you are getting your money’s worth.

Assisted match: Really? What if they are “dead” profiles? Are they going to start contacting dead profiles and entice them subscriptions or have they changed the matching model to only go after “live” profiles?

Not to totally undermine their admirable efforts to rejuvenate the service as it seems like they are trying to make the service more friendly but if they aren’t fixing the underlying problem, which is lack of active subscribers (or filtering your matches to give you them) and a better matching algorithm, then they are just reaching out to those who do not see any hope and are willing to shell out bigger bucks. Seems cheaper than a matchmaker/concierge match service but I am skeptical and look forward to hearing from an actual human being who plunks down the $500 to see what they get. Heck, maybe I should take one for the team and see if they are living up to their word and what they can do for an account with 3000+ matches in “the bank”.

I am more interested in waiting to see if Mr. Ardenghi’s rumor of a better matching algorithm/new site comes true in Feb/Mar 2012, as I am approaching the bottom of the OkCupid barrel. The only problem I see with the 16PF5 clone and getting better accuracy in this new algorithm is that they will need a huge database of active members to pull from, otherwise they are going to be sending you the same “junk” matches outside of reasonable tolerances. We complain about not getting our 5-7 matches a day. Following the algorithm, I would imagine that you are looking at what, maybe one a week for a medium sized city? Perhaps the scarcity of matches in that model will force you to look very closely at your meager pool of curated matches and not close everyone out.
