eHarmony hiring Portuguese-speaking Marketing rep (maybe for a future eHarmony Brazil?)

In a job-posting two weeks ago (May 25), eHarmony is looking for a Portuguese-speaking EMail Marketing Specialist. EMSes help compose the ‘come back to the site and buy this’ messages that registrants are automatically enrolled to receive from the site. I believe this is the first time eHarmony is specifically seeking a bilingual staff.

Why Portuguese? Your guess is as good as mine. The largest Portuguese-speaking nations are: Brazil (190 million speakers), Portugal (10 million), Angola (9 million) and Guinea-Bissau (8 million). I doubt they picked the country because of the language; they picked the language because of the country. Maybe we’ll see an eHarmony Brazil soon?

    Without LOCAL offices,

IT WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE for any company to do business here, in (Latin) South American.

Match, Meetic, Be2 and others had been spending millions of U.S. Dollars since years and until now they do not understand the Latin American culture.

I don’t know. If I were to pick a language/country to translate my dating site for, I’ll choose JAPAN or FRANCE first before stepping foot on Brazil. Rich nations + fewer population = more disposable income.

Fernando, what about eHarmony Australia? Isn’t the site making a reasonable killing down under, without local offices or staff?

My biggest issue is with sufficient base.

How does eH get sufficient base of Portugese customers? How do they secure the first 10,000? Or, do they buy these profiles, create fake ones? After all, individuals do not just sign up for an empty system…

I am sure Fernando has some ideas on this, as he tried it a few times. ;-)

To get customers … you need customers first…

John: Simple. eHarmony Canada, Australia, UK and Compatible Partners each initially gave away 90+-day subscriptions for at least 12 weeks, while running a local media blitz (except in the case of CP). The promo’s start and end dates are documented in this blog. The ‘seed’ TV ads always featured American success couples and always had a voice over with a local accent. They will also seed the new site’s success page with success couples from the US site whose stories happen to have ties to the new locale.

(We consistently encouraged past readers to gatecrash these sites, that is, join the country site, get the 90-day membership, then shortly, migrate back.)

Having done this four times in the last four years, they’re experts at it.

They will probably get some customers without doing anything (they already have). They have been matching worldwide for some time now. They just haven’t done the localization and marketing…

I think the issue is if they will be satisfied/successful customers. Of course, that doesn’t matter as long as they start seeing money flowing in, since that’s what they are really after…

Sorry for the delay in answering.

eHarmony Australia is in an Anglosaxon country.

eHarmony Brazil will be in a Latinamerican country. The culture is different.[Big Catholic country with a huge population, the majority with no credit cards and no automatic rebilling possibilities, other competitors like ParPerfeito (Match Meetic joint venture) and Be2 there]

eHarmony in Europe: 10 European countries
    * eHarmony UK
    +
    * eDarling (eHarmony owns 30%) is eHarmony rebranded and improved for some European countries like Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Poland.

    eHarmony Japan? will be impossible.
The Big 5 is good for orientative purposes but not good enough for predictive purposes, it will “see” all Japanese women/men as all the same.
    Moreover you can read:
“PATTERNS AND UNIVERSALS OF ADULT ROMANTIC ATTACHMENT ACROSS 62 CULTURAL REGIONS Are Models of Self and of Other Pancultural Constructs?”
    JOURNAL OF CROSS-CULTURAL PSYCHOLOGY, Vol. 35 No. 4, July 2004 367-402

“Analyses of specific attachment styles revealed that secure romantic attachment was normative in 79% of cultures and that preoccupied romantic attachment was particularly prevalent in East Asian cultures.”
