Tips and tricks: How to close your account on eHarmony

UPDATE: The instructions below are incomplete. See How to cancel eHarmony for updated and expanded information.

Ah you’re sick of it, huh? I can’t blame you. ;-) Furthermore, closing your account is far, far easier than closing your matches individually when you want nothing to do with eHarmony anymore. Really I can’t blame you. Here’s the procedure: The official link to delete your account in eHarmony is (you must be signed in):

US http://www.eharmony.com/singles/servlet/user/myaccount/close
CANADA http://www.eharmony.ca/singles/servlet/user/myaccount/close
AUSTRALIA http://www.eharmony.com.au/singles/servlet/user/myaccount/close
UK http://www.eharmony.co.uk/singles/servlet/user/myaccount/close
Compatible Partners http://www.compatiblepartners.net/singles/servlet/user/myaccount/close

This link is accessible by clicking My Settings > Account Settings > Close account.

If you purchased a subscription using a payment plan, the ‘close account’ link will not appear until after you’ve made the final payment, i.e., eHarmony has charged you the final payment.

Because eHarmony cares about our happiness, and not just retain another bit in its database, eHarmony will try to change your mind with the following screen:

Account Information

You are about to close your eHarmony.com account. This will permanently close all of your existing matches, and disable the My Matches page.

If you are closing your account because you’ve met a special person to share your life, on eHarmony or elsewhere, congratulations. If you haven’t yet made that connection, I’d like you to consider the following points:

  • Research shows only 1 in 4 American marriages are actually happy.
  • Choosing the right mate is the KEY to creating a compatible, loving relationship.
  • Finding a soul mate on your own and knowing if you’re really compatible has never been more confusing or difficult.
  • eHarmony’s proven method of selecting compatible matches has helped create thousands of happy, successful relationships.

There are two additional, important points you should know as you search for a special relationship.

First, if you haven’t experienced the success you anticipated with eHarmony, there are probably adjustments that can be made to your account to help make your experience more productive. But in order to help, we need to know what’s wrong.

At the bottom of this page is a HELP link . By clicking on this link and sharing your problem with us, we can work with you to improve your results. We only ask that you wait until you hear from us before continuing to close your account.

Lastly, we really care about your success. There are thousands of online dating services that will offer up hundreds of “matches” based on little more than your favorite hobby. Our goal is completely different. We’re helping you find someone to live with and love FOREVER! We think it is important that people are matched for the right reasons and we want to see you benefit from our approach, as so many others have.

eHarmony isn’t magic. But every day we’re working to address the needs of our members. Chances are we can make eHarmony work for you.

(By the way, the “adjustments” mentioned here can mean retaking the test.)

Account Information

This page will allow you to close your eHarmony account automatically. When you click on the CLOSE button below you will be removed from our matching database and automatic email system. You will also permanently lose any matches you may currently have.

Account Information

In a few moments, you will receive an email from eHarmony containing instructions on how to complete the closure of your account. If you have additional questions about your account, you can email Customer Care from the Contact Us page.

So click «Close» twice and you’re gone FOREVER!! In theory, all your personal information is erased from the eH servers. You cannot reopen the account. You and your messages disappear in your present matches’ screens and you receive no more crazy emails. Your login and password stops working and the email address you used is permanently banned from registering or retaking the test.

How to stop receiving eHarmony emails? Give a fake address.

Will your information disappear from the member count and when they cross-analyse their profiling database? Honestly speaking I doubt it. Will you receive no more emails? We found unconfirmed reports (such as this) that say otherwise. What you can do further, if you want, is to change your email address on the eHarmony system first to a dummy address. Even further, if you want, is to blank all your About Me answers and your Account Setting details, overwrite your credit card with a fake yet valid number, and thoroughly restrict your match settings, and change your location to China. It’s up to you.

Can someone tell me the phone number to contact eharmony. I signed up in June 2009, I was in the states visiting my kids and on my profile I stated I live in Kinshasa in the DR Congo. I signed up as entertainment and it seemed that I did get good matches, my problem is that since returning to Kinshasa, I am unable to access eharmony, and would prefer to quit rather than be frustrated wondering if there are unanswered matches. If someone can either give me an email that will go to them or a phone number, it will cost a small fortune even if it is an 800 number, but I cannot access them so it is useless. Thanks

oh, and if you want to cancel, they’ll make it seem like you can, but you’ve paid so too bad. keep pushing. the customer service rep will eventually tell you that you do get 3 days to cancel once payment has been made.

Thanks…the info was excellent. I actually live outside the US and signed up for the heck of it but saw the profile of someone I’m really, really interested in. I can’t afford the monthly rates cuz the exchange rate is $6.30 of my dollars to US$1.Because I haven’t paid I can’t communicate with him obviously the way I’d like and he eventually closed me off!:(

I have not received one response in over a year of membership. I am an average looking lady, widowed, no weirdness, etc. Average pics, but I am fun and very clever – is there a way to get a refund or a free time online? I also think that it’s ridiculous to pay to “tweek” one’s profile when already paying their fee. If I were young and hot, wouldn’t need a dating site. I found a wonderful husband and would like to have that kind of relationship again.

Michelle, have you had a friend — or even better, an attractive friend of the opposite sex — read through your profile and photos and comment upon them?

The site told me I’m unmatchable and I want to close my account. I can’t figure how though, I don’t see a My Account tag. Am I being stupid?

Rose, if you are ‘unable to match’, your profile is basically sitting there doing nothing. You aren’t being matched and the only thing you have access to on the service is the personality profile derived from your questionnaire, which everyone gets for free. If you paid for a sub, then found out you are ‘unable to match’, call the CS number and ask for a refund. It shouldn’t be a problem, in fact, they usually refund ‘unable to match’ automatically.

Can I cancel EHarmony after I have been in it for a month and somehow stop the withdrawal of payments from my account?
I am not satisfied at all!

Sandy, the cancel-and-stop-all-charges period is only 3 days, as stated in EH’s Terms and Conditions of Sale. If you want to stop the rest of the installments, you will have to make up an excuse or a story. See our article How to get a refund.

The other way is to cancel that credit card.

    Let us know what happens.

Just so you all know… I had an eharmony account and closed it prior to the 3-month expiration date. A few months later, I got a call from my creditcard company asking if I had made purchases (since I hadn’t used the credit card in so long as it is closed to being max’d out). They told me eharmony had tried to pull the money twice and they declined it. SO, I called eharmony and talked to a representative who was very friendly however she was persistent in telling me that they could only refund 50% of the $90 that was charged. I told her that I did not authorize that payment. She continued to explain that “renewal is explained in the terms and conditions agreement.” I continued with “Yes I know but why would you renew a canceled account.” She then said that I never canceled it. I DID cancel it because I immediately signed up for match.com after (and I told her that). It wasn’t until I told her that I work for a revenue department and we would never pull funds from someone’s account without their authorization and that this is unfair and someone needs to do something about it. She then said she would refund it as a one-tme courtesy. FYI….. if you know you are right, stand your ground, these people are looking for your $ and they will try to tell you there is nothing they can do but there is. The number to call for billing inquiries is 800-951-2023. Good Luck!

Claire, yes, eHarmony sends postal mail. I hope you’re not too surprised.

I got a postcard from them in the mail last August with the usual 3-for-1 $19.95 when-you-return offer.

Sorry, I don’t have the card anymore, so take this for what it’s worth.
