Is eHarmony a market research company ?

Is eHarmony a market research company ? as I have just spent the last hour filling out what was an extremely detailed form giving the most intimate personal details, they make luring promises to match your profile for free. In my case they declined to find me a match. I just wonder how many thousands of others this as happened to, and even more worring is this information being sold on to others, for instance Harris Interactive to whom I have discovered is a market research company to whom they are associated with ?

I am a Legal Consultant by profession so I am naturally suspicious, and I am keeping an eye open for unauthorised emails, sales and spam which may be a resultant factor. It would be interesting to have your comments as I am sure I am not on my own basing m concerns. Nothing is done for nothing these days and it remains what their motives are, what do you think ?

Mike, I think the best response that no they are not. They do not accept certain people for various reasons. If someone is too relationship phobic, or if there is a major discrepancy in your answers. Also they have filters to rule out that someone has any major personality problems that might inhibit them from having a successful relationship. They basically can decline for any reason they see would inhibit a healthy relationship, id est they pick and choose. There a other variables that lead them to decline people for various reasons. I hope this helps.

I don’t think they are a market research company. I do, however, believe they earn money in various ways, so make sure you read the fine print in their terms of use and privacy policy… I haven’t read it in quite a while, but it’s probably the best way to tell if they sell your information to 3rd parties. Recently I tried RewardingLove.com which is new. They seem to run their business with integrity.
As far as not being accepted on eHarmony, I agree with the above comment from Mr. Hernandez. I think their system looks for significant discrepancies. However, the many assumptions made by the eHarmony matching system are just that… assumptions… and we all know what assuming does! :)

Mike, “Extensive Targeting Capabilities” on this page http://www.eharmony.com/advertising/singles answers your question, and I quote:

    - imagine what you could do with that kind of user information!

That said, their privacy policy http://www.eharmony.com/privacy/statement#disclosure lists the situations where they give your email address or personal information to other people and companies.
