Lately, the eHarmony Cracked Google Group has been abuzz with one of the most controversial profile reviews yet. One that has a lot of people shouting about how truly inappropriate it is – despite the fact that he says that it had been “moderately” successful.
In response to the (often pointed) criticism he received, he said that he was trying to be “cocky and funny”, as endorsed by many pick-up artist communities. He pointed out that a lot of women appreciated his sense of humor. And a lot of women also insta-closed him. He was wondering what was working, and what wasn’t.
So, why does someone want to be “cocky and funny” in the first place?
Read on, my friends…
A long time ago, the earliest pick-up artists struggled to figure out: How do you get girls to like you?
One of the cleverer early pickup artists, David DeAngelo, tried to figure it out by watching guys who were “good with women”.
One thing that he noticed is that, when these so-called “naturals” acted in a way that was simultaneously cocky and funny, women liked it.
And he recognized that being “cocky” and “funny” had to occur together.
A guy who was just cocky came off as arrogant, self-interested, boorish, demanding, loud, insecure, and sexually obsessed. And women didn’t like that.
On the other hand, guys who were just funny, at best, came off as “cute” or entertaining, but not terribly attractive. At worst, they were seen as stupid show-off clowns. And women didn’t like those guys either.
On the other hand, when “naturals” combined these traits – women responded.
And, utilizing the scientific method – David DeAngelo started to act cocky and funny himself. And found that the results with women were the same when he did it.
And, so, this discovery spread within the pickup artist community. Some pickup artists (including David DeAngelo) even tried to apply “cocky and funny” principles online.
Sometimes, it worked. And many pickup artists reported their successes.
On the other hand, some were less successful.
Over time, folks who spent a lot of time online discovered that being “Cocky and Funny” has it’s limitations.
And I’ll talk about those in part 2.
