Signed up for eHarmony without your consent?
Above is a link to a blog post by Craig Newmark, the founder of Craigslist, dated December 22, 2005. Someone registered with eHarmony using Newmark’s email address and Newmark started receiving matches, requests for communication, subscription offers, etc. He writes, “the problem is that they don’t confirm that a person who signs up on their site is actually the owner of the email address involved.”
How long ago was that blog post? THREE AND A HALF YEARS AGO TODAY!
Nothing has changed. Complaints are everywhere. For example, the following six are in Twitter, all in the last five days:
- mikepinkerton: Someone signed up for an eHarmony account with my email address. Now’s my big chance to meet Todd or Jim in Delaware! ROTFL! 13 hours ago
- kelseysutherlin: uhhh… who gave my email to eHarmony? annoying. 11:08 AM Jun 19th
- Critus: Can someone ‘splain to me how I have matches at eHarmony if I’ve never signed up for eHarmony? That’s some hardcore matching. 1:09 PM Jun 19th
- yasmineyvette: Bahaha I have no idea why I keep getting e-mails from e-harmony. No thank you I would not like to be matched. 12:09 AM Jun 17th
- WritRams: Dear eHarmony: When you send me spam email that says “Find other singles like you!” do you mean the married with children kind like me? 6:55 PM Jun 17th
- CTK1: OKAY “eHarmony” I don’t know how you got my email address but this love fest is OVER! Go peddle your piddly dating wares elsewhere! LOSER! 4:59 PM Jun 18th
This is a “Get a round tuit” in the extreme.
