Match.com responds to the McGinn lawsuit

This morning, Mark Brooks of Online Personals Watch publishes a statement from Match.com CEO Greg Blatt regarding the recent deception lawsuit by Sean McGinn against Match.

McGinn alleges the popular matchmaking Web site dangles phony date bait by posting profiles of people who no longer subscribe to its $39.99-a-month service.

Blatt responds, saying that Match’s success depends on their members’ success making meaningful online connections, therefore the allegation that Match encourages members to connect with inactive members makes no sense.

Well, Mr. Blatt, if showing bright yellow “Mail Her” envelope icons on dead or unpaid profiles don’t constitute encouragement then I say “good luck” to you in court.

I am rooting for the plaintiff and would not mind joining him in a class action suit. I imagine that there are others that would not, either. It would be interesting if he wins because it would set a precedent for others to sue and collect damages, which would potentially bankrupt the company.

I guess I should start working on an post updating on how Match.com has (not) been working out for me since I’m rapidly approaching month six with them.

It’s easy to laugh at this guy (as this blogger did: http://lawblog.legalmatch.com/2009/09/17/loser-in-love-drops-fraud-class-action-lawsuit/ ), but some of these websites do seem to use fairly deceptive marketing practices.

Given that some of their customers might be more vulnerable to emotional manipulation than the average person, this is something to watch for.
