It’s about time for another membership counts update! How many members does eHarmony have?

There are two parts to this question.

1. How many members does eHarmony have since they started?

eHarmony has stopped publishing updated membership numbers since April 2008. Since April last year, all the advertising, press releases and media interviews coming from them say they have “over 20 million members”. They never explained why they stopped stating their membership size.

• I hope it’s not because this blog decided to put the numbers in a membership chart.

You know what, it’s easy to find out how many registrants they have since they began the service in 2000. Here’s the step by step:

1. Visit the eHarmony home page (any country!) and start the registration process:

2. After you click “Find My Matches” and get the “Congratulations! You have taken the first step towards finding a successful relationship.” page, right click on that page and choose “View Source”

3. On the HTML source, press “Ctrl-F” and look for the word “s.prop32″. It appears twice on the HTML. The first is like this:

and the second is as a value of the “&user=” parameter of a URL. That, friends, is your user ID #. Yes, eHarmony, including all its country sites, now has 28 million registrants.

2. How many members are actively visiting the site?

For this we need to visit an website audience measurement service called Quantcast. There are separate Quantcast reports for the US site, the Canadian site, the Australian site, the United Kingdom site and Compatible Partners.

1. Scroll to the bottom of the screen for the “Traffic Frequency Graph”. Quantcast explains this graph as follows:

• Addicts visit the site more than 30 times in a month.
• Regulars visit the site between 2 to 30 times in a month.
• Passers-by have one visit during the entire month.

Add the Addicts and the Regulars in a calculator.

2. Scroll back to the top and read the “Monthly People Count”, or, if eHarmony lets you see it, the “Daily People Count”. Multiply the sum by the People Count. That, friends, is how many people are active on that country site.

Yes, eHarmony US only has 1.5 million active visitors in the last 30 days. Not a lot, eh? Well, check out the UK site….
