Feature Request: Better e-mail notifications

I know that Pyke blasted eHarmony when they took things one step in the wrong direction but I would like to submit a revised plan for the e-mail notifications.  They were on the right track, if they got rid of the “cheese” factor.

Instead of the “action” subject line:

  • Username — we’ve got a match for you
  • eHarmony Match Communication received!

Why can’t they (since they have already spent the compute/database time to retrieve the name/info) word them:

  • Meet – Username, Age from Anytown, Anycountry
  • Username from Anytown, Anycountry sent you a message

This would let me instantly prioritize…do I need to login to look at this communication now because I’m really interested or can it wait a while.  Since all messages come from the the same e-mail addresses, you can still filter based on sender if that’s a concern.

They could add an option for e-mail format to the website and save on their bandwidth (and save $$$) for those of us who just need a quickie plain-text message.

I guess I don’t see the point in printing such a generic piece of information somewhere with such high “real-estate” and “grab” value.  I almost don’t need to look in the message itself if I have those piece of information in the subject, especially if one gets multiple new matches (i.e. oh great, they are all five states away, nothing pressing here).  In that case (most of the time), I’m just going to login and go straight to the “New” tab and not click back and forth between e-mail but since it doesn’t “cost” anything when generating the e-mail, there is no harm in including it.

By the way, they do link directly to the match from the e-mail message, so it should be a piece of cake to deal with the request I made, if it hasn’t already been fixed.

Anyhow, just food for thought.

Score plus-ten for usability, score minus-ten for revenue: eHarmony emails have begun to have advertising in them. If they put key information on the subject line, people will stop opening some emails.

It’s less deleterious nowadays though because email clients like Outlook, Gmail and Yahoo! don’t display images and tracking pixels.

A quickie plain-text message is there; you just don’t see it in your email app.

I guess what one needs is an extensible e-mail application that can flag eHarmony e-mails and generate a user-specified subject from the contents of the message…
